Stand beneath the dome that defined a thousand years of Christian architecture, trace the gold tesserae of the 13th-century Deesis mosaic, and walk through the Imperial Door once reserved for emperors. Built in 537 AD by Justinian I and now in its third life as both a working mosque and the Hagia Sophia Experience Museum, this is the most layered building on earth. Skip the line on the upper gallery.
Buy TicketsHagia Sophia, in Istanbul's Sultanahmet district, has stood at the centre of the city since Justinian I inaugurated it in 537 AD. It served as the Byzantine cathedral for nearly a thousand years, became an Ottoman imperial mosque in 1453, was a museum from 1934 to 2020, and since 2024 the upper gallery has been re-opened as the paid Hagia Sophia Experience Museum with a separate entrance for foreign visitors. For planning, see our visitors guide, the latest opening hours and our best time to visit page.

The smartest way to visit Hagia Sophia
Walk past the long Sultanahmet queue with a pre-booked timed-entry slot for the upper gallery. The foreign-visitor entrance from Soğukçeşme Sokağı can have 60+ minute waits without a reservation in summer.
Add the official audio guide in 8 languages — narrated history covers the dome of Justinian, the Deesis mosaic, the Viking runes on the parapet, and the Ottoman calligraphy roundels.
Plans change. Cancel up to 24 hours before your visit for a full refund — no questions asked, no fees, no fine print.
Show your ticket directly from your phone at the foreign-visitor entrance. No printing, no paper, no queueing at the kiosk.
On the south wall of the upper gallery, dating to roughly 1261 AD after the Latin occupation of Constantinople ended, the Deesis mosaic shows Christ flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. It is universally regarded as the masterpiece of late Byzantine art — the tesserae are tiny, set at deliberately uneven angles to catch candlelight, and the modelling of Christ's face is extraordinarily naturalistic for its date.
You can only reach the Deesis on the upper gallery via the Hagia Sophia Experience Museum ticket, accessed by a stone ramp originally built so that empresses could reach their viewing balcony on horseback. From the same level you can see the Imperial Door directly below, the dome of Justinian rising 55 metres above the floor, and the four enormous Ottoman calligraphy roundels added in the 19th century.
